Using the Libraries Proxy Services to access Networked Resources that require user authentication This proxy server is for use by Purdue West Lafayette students and staff.
Software licenses, copyright restrictions and other contractual agreements require that many of the Libraries' networked resources be restricted to members of the Purdue University Community only. Some examples are Web of Science, JSTOR, Books in Print, and the INSPIRE databases. This requires that you access the Libraries networked resources from a machine on the Purdue Data network or via the Libraries proxy server using your University ID. In order to provide the Purdue Community with access to our networked resources from networks beyond Purdue the Libraries has implemented proxy services for web resources. The proxy server will allow you to access resources that are access restricted by Internet address (i.e., only allow you to connect from a machine identified as being from *.purdue.edu). The Library will assist patrons, using Libraries supported software (Netscape 3 or 4) when accessing Libraries networked resources. Assistance with software from Internet service providers should be provided by the provider's support mechanism. The usual reason you may require proxy services is that you already have a valid Purdue University ID but are accessing Purdue Libraries networked resources from another network. Such situations would occur when you are accessing Purdue Libraries networked resources from:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Some companies may be using a proxy server to restrict Internet access. Because of this you may be unable to configure your web browser to use the Purdue University Libraries Proxy Server simultaneously. In this case you will not be able utilize the Libraries proxy services. The Proxy Server does two things:
You must have a valid Purdue University ID to access the proxy server. You will also need to configure your web browser to use proxy services. NOTE: The instructions below are for Netscape and Internet Explorer, however most web browsers have similar options for proxy configuration. Configuration of the
web proxy server has been tested with Netscape. Most web browsers provide
options for proxy configuration that may differ slightly from the
instruction above. Please check with your Internet service provider for
the best method to configure their web browser for proxy
services.
